Foot Corn

Corns are specially-shaped calluses that usually occur on thin, hairless and smooth skin surfaces, especially on the top of toes. They can sometimes occur on the thicker skin surfaces.

Hard corns occur on dry, flat surfaces of skin. Hard corns commonly occur on the top of the smaller toes or on the outer side of the little toe. These are the areas where poorly fitted shoes tend to rub most.

Soft corns (frequently found between two toes) stay moist, keeping the surrounding skin soft. The corn's center is not soft, however. Soft corns sometimes become infected.

The common causes of corns are rubbing and pressure from tight or poor fitting shoes, which tend to cause corns on the top of the toes and side of the little toe. Too much walking or running will also be a major cause (which tends to cause corns on the sole of the feet.)
